Why is it that promoters make us send our booth fees WITH our applications, and then keep them in a drawer for several months and cash them a week before the event? You'd think they would be Using the money they get in advance, especially events which don't charge admission,to Produce the event. But no, today I found out that I have been hit with over $300 in overdraft fees becaue a check I wrote to a promoter several months ago came in the other day, when I thought I had finally straightened out my bank account, making sure funds were there to cover each transaction.
When *I* am incharge, I will not require any funds to be sent until After screening and acceptance, so that my vendors will know where their monay is when they need it.
And in the future I will pay ALL of my booth fees by money order.

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 3:42 PMQatana,
I am SOO with you on this.
It is one of my bigger peeves when applying for a show.
And yes, I had the same thought of sending & paying with a Money Order ONLY rather than a check... but the problem with that is, if you are sending in your app... & payment... & then waiting to get in to the event...
what happens if for some reason you don't get into the event? It seems like it would be more difficult to get your uncashed MO back (more work for them to possibly send... when it seems to be hard enough for them to cash the check let alone send an MO back). Then can you cash it in after that if it is not made out to you? (just curious, as these were my concerns with possibly sending an MO instead).
Good to know I am not the Only one that feels this way.
take care,

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 3:54 PMBut the point is they NEVER cash the check. Every time I don't get into a show, they send back my actual check, whether it takes a week or six months. If they had cashed my check When I sent it, my checking account wouldn't have snowballed into over 300 bucks of service charges.
So its just as easy for them to return a MO as a check. Also, you can send a Blank MO. -

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 6:29 PMSadly though this is common in many types of businesses, not just the faires... Many times I send out funds for certain events I do for my real paying job only to either find out when I audit my check book each month something from 2 months back hasnt cleared. Or something I thought cleared 6 months ago suddenly hits the one week i dont have the extra funds in the account...
I've been tempted to do the money order route as well, but my legal counsel warned me against that... Atleast with a check, should something go ary, if its cashed, I now have a trail and proof they received my funds. (Yes have had a couple of events try to claim they never received my money, only to have my bank send me a copy of the cashed check two weeks later... Again though, there were IT/Computer related events, not faires...)
So you may need to weigh the security of the check vs. the lack of evidence trail with the Money Order. -

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 6:30 PMForgot to add, if an uncashed check expires because of age, you dont loose the funds from your account. Even if they return the money order to you, if to much time has elapsed, you risk loosing that money because many money orders are only valid for a short time. -

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 6:37 PMWell I was planning on drawing it from my bank, so there Is a paper trail, but I imagine a Cashier's check would work for that. I save receipts...

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 7:58 PMA suggestion that was made to me was to open a second checking account just for sending fees and advanced payments. This way the money stays safely in your account but does not come out of your main business account.

Re: Booth Fee Checks
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 10:19 PMTried that. Works great until the primary account is empty and you get hungry. Now I don't do shows anymore so the question is now moot for me. In fact, I just had my ability to accept credit cards cancelled. Paypal works just fine for the occasional sale I make.
