According to one of Cat's posts on the Dickens tribe, the "vendors are happy about" opening on the 23rd of December and not on the 24th. I don't have a booth there anymore but Im interested in knowing exactly which booth owners they were, cuz the ones I've talked to think the idea sucks.
I do know it costs us just as much to open up for one day as it does to open up for two...not to mention taking an extra week from Life for teardown. And I would rather be at Dickens on xmas eve than anywhere else, but not to tear down the booth!
Any takers?

Re: Regarding Dickens
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 4:20 PMaltho i'm probably not going to be 'working' working dickens... being open for just one day... please -- some of the best 'shopping' I have ever done was on Christmas Eve... (yea I procrastinate... ) and what better way to spend Christmas Eve, then with another part of my family... -

Re: Regarding Dickens
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 8:15 PMI am really looking forward to being there, not only will the Christmas mood be in full infection but it will give a chance to see all my Faire family just before the holiday. I think the biggest difficulty is going to be the time for teardown, when everyone wants to be at home and spend time with their family after the big day. -

Re: Regarding Dickens
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 12:11 PMThis question was intended specifically for booth OWNERs, the ones who have to pay for the booth, pay for the inventory, pay travel, lodging and food expenses, pay for employee liability insurance, pay for publicity and pay you, the booth Workers, how THEY feel about this.
HOw do the Booth Owners feel about opening on Saturday and NOT opening on Sunday? How do they feel about the additional work & travel time? Not to mention the additional expense.
If I worked in a booth I did not own, I would have an entirely different attitude about it all. -

Re: Regarding Dickens
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 4:10 PMSorry, but I thought that this was for all types of boothies, not just those who own a booth themselves. Having run a booth and having to manage people and scheduling, plus having to do most of the work of an owner, without the financial ability to own one myself. Some booth owners aren't actually at the faire themselves. Financial considerations are for owners & workers. It seems money is your biggest concern, not the fact that some booths may not have anyone there to work in them on that day, making the whole point of being open mute. Most workers pay their own travel and lodging expenses, food, costuming, etc. without seeing a profit other than a set pay. Those of us who do not live in San Francisco are just as much affected by a single day of work as are the booth owners, maybe more.
Financially it is not in the best interest of anyone other than the booth owners, who profit from sales, and the main production company, who profits from the gate, to have that extra day. Will this stop any of us from being there, no. As a matter of fact, some of us will be the only ones at the booths that day, since those who control the booths can decide who is working and who is not that day.
Maybe you should rename the tribe Booth Owners, so those of us with an entirely different attitude can participate in the conversation as well. -

Re: Regarding Dickens
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 4:34 PMWhile the meta for this tribe begins with "Do you own a booth", yes it is for anyone who works in one, However THIS particular thread is specifically addressed to the peple who actually DO pay the expenses of running and staffing a booth, and specifically for RBP events ONLY.
.
I am very much aware that many of you/us DO make a significant part of our livings working in a booth that is owned by someone other than ourselves, but honestly, the majority of booth workers At Renaissance Faire are doing it for the benefits, not the bucks. Gods know, I made a living at it for years in the Fine Craft and gem/jewelry circuit, but there were NO benefits involved other than 12 hour work days in heels, days spent in airports and convention centers and co-workers asking, on my return to my "real" job, how my vacation was..
If no one is available to work in a booth on a given day, than it is the booth owner's problem and is one more considerstion in the decision to participate At All. I pulled out of ALL my events because I lost my salesman and can't find someone who can do what he did, and know damn well I'd end up losing every cent I invested if I try to work my own booth myself, I can sell anythin but my own artwork!
But yeah, this particular question is directed at the people who make the decisions, if not the products (another favorite tangent of mine) -

Re: Regarding Dickens
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 4:57 PMI appologize for sounding bitchy in the last post, I have gotten flooded with the you just work in a booth from actors, and I got defensive in what at the time seemed as a you don't own, so you don't matter. Looking back, I was aggresive and killed the intent of my statement. I do work directly with both the booth owner and the company owner when it comes to shows, and have put in lots of hours of time just to be sure that the booth continues to do the Faires. I take a lot of pride in who I work for and do as much as I can, paid or not, to continue to be able to do so. On a side note, the extra day is being looked at by the booth owner as a final day of sales, plus a day to have fun and reward all the workers for a great year of work. So all of us, owners and workers are really glad of the last day. And we'll be there til midnight packing up and tearing down -

Re: Regarding Dickens
Wed, July 19, 2006 - 5:21 PMNo Prob John.'
Yeah, thats one of them-working till midnite tearing down...at least you guys are "local" and don't Have to pay for lodging...and have a goodly sized crew, at that. I feel for the ones who have to travel, pay for lodging, have no help for teardown and have to come back after xmas and incur additional expense.
Me, I had a five minute tear-down.... -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Regarding Dickens
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 10:34 AMI try to help one of the other booths clean up once we're done, since it's about 2 hours from end of show til everything is loaded and ready to go. This year, with gas prices, I might be staying in the city anyways, just as expensive to drive as it is to stay there in a motel. I can't imagine trying to tear down after the holiday, because there's just no way with my weekday job of being able to do it. Our standard tear down crew is 2, usually Don and myself, but we've got it down. Guess it's the 20+years of experience between the 2 of us that makes it possible.
