Tue, May 24, 2005 - 3:03 PMJust Try to set me on fire! I've been flameproofing all day, its just like coating your entire body with Elmer's glue, and then having nobody to peel it off...
anyway, don't forget, burlap makes a great disguise for your EZ-Up!
Awnings, view cuts, canopies,etc...

Re: need burlap?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 8:10 PMNo, we don't have a site up yet.
For canvas you should check out sailmakers. Usually they will cut, hem & grommet,if necessary. Sounds like you want to do your own sewing, tho!

Re: need burlap?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 8:16 PMMind that Burlap is NOT renaissance authentic!!!
Burlap is jute and the first export shipment from India to the UK was in 1793.
www.nyp-corp.com/Jute_to_B...f%20Burlap
Canvas is authentic. But mind the contence of modern canvas, They tend to put a lot of cotton in it. -
-
Re: need burlap?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 8:34 PMHowever Renaissance Faires have ALWAYS( always being of course the past ten years that I have been active) been built of burlap. Red Barn Productions have the strictest policies regarding building materials in a Renaissance Faire, and we work for them.
Burlap is significantly less expensive and much, much easier to work with as it can be hog-ringed together rather than sewn. Also less wind resistant.
Burlap is technically sackcloth. Which is period. Sackcloth was made of hemp. Which costs far,far more than canvas. We will only take absolute authenticity so far! -
-
Re: need burlap?
Tue, May 24, 2005 - 9:35 PMmade of hemp, yes, but not burlap.
But if renaissance fairs aprove that, its up to them. I just wanted to point out the (non)authenticity of it.
I know it is very difficult to be fully authentic. Specialy now they put cotton an polyester in everything.
Pure wool or hemp/linen costs nowadays a small fortune.( and is hard to get) Which is weird, because in the old days it was the other way around :-) If something had cotton in it, it was more expensive.
Even I have to make authenticity-consessions with my quest for canvas. But hope to replace it someday with 100% authentic stuph.

Re: need burlap?
Wed, May 25, 2005 - 2:56 AMQatana, I've been doing Faire for close to 30 years now, and as far as I can recall, it has *ALWAYS* been burlap.
Authenticity in how a booth or lodging is built, is much more appreciated in the SCA. However, they also do not typically have to deal with putting fire-proofing on ALL of thier materials. (Although *some* may do so.)
And for the most part, I *think*, the public doesn't really care what the booths and sun shades are made of. Heck, I'm guessing 99.9 % of them never noticed the burlap spider up by archery at Black Point.
As long as there is something to block the sun or dust, I don't think the public even notices. -
-
Re: need burlap?
Wed, May 25, 2005 - 6:17 AM30 years ago the knowledge of authenticity was far below level.
They came a long way since then. ( the fact they keep using it, doesnt make it more authentic) 30 years ago, viking re-enactors were running around with horns on their helmet...
Personally I think its important to teach the public about the period the show is about. If it is Viking or renaissance. And if you keep using burlap, you will never show the public how it should have been. They wont know better. (same thing with your outfit )
Its up to you. -
-
Re: need burlap?
Wed, May 25, 2005 - 7:28 AMAll I can say Vikinggirl, if you can build a 30x30 foot shade canopy out of absolutely period components, with absolutely period techniques, you will not be able to deliver it for less than $1,000, and we have to make Ten of them, total. Plus several thousand feet of view cut.
Sometimes economy has to take the place of authenticity. -

Burlap Report
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 10:28 AMFirst weekend at Tahoe- according to Kevin Patterson: I couldn't believe it. The wind was ripping through everything but the burlap just Stayed there. Didn't budge.

Re: Burlap Report
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 10:33 AMlol yeah, winds picked up around 11:30 Saturday night and continued through to the next day... Walked the site Sunday morning to see a couple of the gates ripped off the hinges (doesnt that happen every year?) and plastic put up in back areas ripped to shreds... -
-
Re: Burlap Report
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 10:35 AMyeah, but how did the Burlap look? I've only gotten third hand reports! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Burlap Report
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 10:39 AMOh sorry, lol phone call came in so i closed the post without getting to the important part...
The burlap looked great... It did come down in a couple of areas, but nowhere near as bad as did the canvas people put up. The gate that ripped off the moorings was one of the large vehicle pass throughs covered in burlap, the hinges were torked to hell but the burlap was fully in tact.
The few areas that did come down were quickly fixed. Basicly one small section of a large area over by joust. -

Re: Burlap Report
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 7:07 PMAnd now we hear the canopies held through rain and snow. Which really wasn't necassary since it only takes a couple of minutes to get it down. Or up.
We are still madly hig-ringing, gotta cover the food courts.
Guildyard? New Props? New Shows?
no, 2005, Year of Burlap. -

Re: need burlap?
Fri, December 9, 2005 - 10:55 AMoh the beautiful serpentine.........I must have some pics of it somewhere....I have a picture somewhere of my now 20yr old daughter bouncing on the mainstage canopy before we raised it in the air ( she was less than a year old at the time)....burlap was an incredible art.......spidering the canopies with 1/4inch rope befor the burlap was put on was always one of my favorite parts. I am so glad you noticed.........Thankyou for noticing, oh and thankyou for giving me my first real job at the fair (7 darts for a dollar), was it 76 or 77? You are definetly one of those people who make the fair a family for me, after all these years.....your smile always makes me smile......see you this weekend. -

Re: need burlap?
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 3:07 AMYou're welcome, hon. It was called "Double Darts". (Because you could 'double' your money. ) Although I do think it was '78 nor '79. I didn't Manage for Chic, until I had worked for him at least a couple years. I first worked Faire (-for Chic Montgomery- ) in '76.
(Please forgive the delay in responding. ) :) Didn't get to see you much this last weekend. Hope you're doin' alright. -

I think sending a Private Message to Qatana via her tribe profile, is most likely the best/easiest way. -
