Boothless Worker Looking For RPFS '09 Spot

Hey everyone-

I know it's pretty early to be posting this, and that I should probably wait until March and just walk around site, but I thought it couldn't hurt to post this here-

There's a good chance I'll be boothless this year at Southern- I generally work Fellowship Foundry (and this past year I also spent some time at Piuma Mia) but last year it became a less pleasant place to work and if things don't change there I'll be less willing to dedicate my time to them.

If you're looking for a P/T booth worker or hawker, please consider letting me know?

food booth manager wanted for BayCeltic Festival 02/21/2009

Hi,
We are putting on a San Francisco Bay Celtic Festival at the Oakland Veterans Hall 200 Grand Avenue Oakland on Februrary 21, 2009.

We are looking for someone to manage the food booth, the cafeteria. Actually, we are selling the space for $100. Your bring the food, sell it for whatever you can get for it. Typically, sodas, fruit juices, basic sandwiches, gnoches do well. We expect about 400 to 600 people. Booth need to be open from about 3pm to about 8 pm. You get to use the entire cafeteria, a 1000 square foot room. We just don't want to manage it ourselves.

Performers are Black Brothers, Tempest, Cullan's Hounds, Molly's Revenge, Avalon Rising, Steve Baughman, Siamsa, Musicians workshop, Musical Showcase, others not yet confirmed

Bud Moody needs help

Bud Moody, long time crew member and owner of Shepherds Pie/Bangers at the Southern California faire has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Bud and Joyce would like to go back to Australia so he can get care there. As an Australian citizen he falls under their health care program. The problem is the money for the flights. We should already have one coach ticket (80,000 miles ). Does anyone have 65,000 miles on United they can give so we can get him home? All of the miles must come from one account. That account can only accept 15,000 miles a year, which we have as extra right now.

Per United the cost is 80,000 miles coach, 100,000 miles business, and 140,000 miles first class.

If you have any questions, you can contact me or Michelle Amsbury.

Thanks,
General questions about art festivals

Hi guys,

I've never been a vendor at an art/craft festival before, so I have a hoard of questions. Are you guys able to do this for a living, or just on the side? What festivals should I try to sign up for and which to avoid (I live in North Carolina if anyone has experience specifically with the southeast)? I know that there is sales tax to deal with, but what other taxes do you have to figure in? Do you generally have to go along with that standard fireproof tent...and if so what is the best place to pick one up? What supplies do you need to have...do you have to have some kind of cash/credit card register (and where is the best place to look for everything)? Can you expect to earn back fees and supply costs for each event? How do you figure what to charge for artwork? Anything else you can think of would be helpful and appreciated. I've looked up some information online, but I still feel lost. Plus...I have a very skeptical fiance who drives me crazy bringing up every obstacle he can imagine happening and thinks it will be a complete waste of money. I just want to be realistic and know what I would be getting into.

Thanks!

Booth Fee Checks

Why is it that promoters make us send our booth fees WITH our applications, and then keep them in a drawer for several months and cash them a week before the event? You'd think they would be Using the money they get in advance, especially events which don't charge admission,to Produce the event. But no, today I found out that I have been hit with over $300 in overdraft fees becaue a check I wrote to a promoter several months ago came in the other day, when I thought I had finally straightened out my bank account, making sure funds were there to cover each transaction.

When *I* am incharge, I will not require any funds to be sent until After screening and acceptance, so that my vendors will know where their monay is when they need it.

And in the future I will pay ALL of my booth fees by money order.

I've been experimenting with making a little video of myself using my hand-powered bow lathe http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/Groomporter/video%20experiment/?action=view&current=BowLathe.flv"

I just used my webcam clamped to a music stand to film it with a USB extension cord and used iMovie to edit it. Once I have some narration for it I figure I'll upload it to Youtube. It has the URL (for more information) to my history of wood turning webpage ...which of course has links to my period games site... so it may bring a little business to us.

I thought it might a possible idea for other crafters to try who might want to try filming their demo, or something showing them working their art and with link back to their website.

Rumor silliness

I’d heard an amazingly stupid rumor over the weekend that I wanted to squash as well as ask if anyone has heard anything like it and from which areas. Though I expect anyone who might have heard it will either have “forgotten” where they’d heard it or were the ones to have made it up themselves. The rumor in question was that RenProd events would insist that guilds/vendors/acts do their shows and only their shows. Anyone who pauses for more than three seconds would notice that it’s both an impractical as well as inconsistent with everything that we do out there.

So for the record, if you’ve heard that one, it’s not true. If you hear someone spouting about it, please ask them where they heard it from (though I’ll expect they’ll suffer the same bouts of sudden amnesia as I’d heard over the weekend).

Not sure if the authors of this piece of telephone are just stupid, or desperate. Or both.

Anyway, so there you have it. If you hear it, it’s simply not true. I think it’s almost time to begin creating these emails in the format of internet hoax announcements.

does anyone have a souce of fire proof fabric that comes with a certificate. I am not interested in buying an already made tent. I bought a large umbrella that I intend to cover with fabric and add walls to, a do it yourself project for the slow season. I am in the LA area, do not want to order, would rather pick it up myself so I can be sure to get the certificate.

how do you folk advertise. I have used a couple of different venues and most were pretty non functional for me. I tried one venture where I ended up with quite the problem with the person involved with it. I just did not understand that I would pay a fee to be in the thing and then have to try and sell the listings too. I feel kind of stupid that I did not get all this squared away in the first place but no one ever wanted me to do that before. was I clueless there or what.
What do you folks use to advertise. I don't really do a web page, all of my items are 100% handmade and 100% different from each other.

Well, I was happy to see that there was action on this tribe this morning, and disappointed to see that the same question has been cross-posted into every faire tribe I belong to.
Cross-posting on related forums in the same website is considered extremely rude and makes it very difficult to follow a conversation that wanders around from tribe to tribe.
I will allow this mornings post to remain as Long as there is booth-related duiscussion
Howevr in the future, any cross-post which is not Directly Related to running a booth at a fair/faire will be deleted.
thank you.

Hear is a quote from the sight.

"Merging the class and elegance of a Renaissance Faire with
the freshness of a Fairy Festival and the chaos of a Burning Man event, into one..."

“I realize the word ‘change’ is terrifying to the old school faire folk, but this production company is going to let the market decide what direction the faire goes in.
If the consumer wants a mob of cheerleaders that appear to be off the set of a “Road Warrior” movie, running through the faire dancing up a storm, creating the illusion that a mob of patrons have taken over the faire. Followed by a similarly attired marching band playing a very hip march with a back beat that you can’t help but want to swing to... then that’s what we’ll give them..!”

I am hoping that there will be someone on this list doing Dickens, who is looking for employees. I have two cute well mannered young ladies (16 and 17) who are looking for work, so that they can afford to do Dickens.

Because I cannot be at every market in the USA, I was wondering if people were interested in sellling my felt?
It is a very unique product. And I have great responses from market people and people who bought them.
Wholesale price will be 20,- a pair. I normally sell them for $30- $35 at markets. ( and people still think it is underpriced)
See my profile for pics.
They are HANDMADE by a Kyrgyz felt artist. And they go wonderful with eastern/bellydance outfits.

Greetings. I am a professional nanny and will be working Ren Faire this year. Some of you may know me through the Danse Macabre or Dickens. I spent the last weekend at Reggae on the River working as a nanny for a booth with three very small children, which gave me the idea to expand my nanny talents to the festivals and faires. I even come equiped with a brolly:) So, if you need a nanny or childminder to run around and keep track of small children at Northern, please drop me a pm on tribe.

Cheers

According to one of Cat's posts on the Dickens tribe, the "vendors are happy about" opening on the 23rd of December and not on the 24th. I don't have a booth there anymore but Im interested in knowing exactly which booth owners they were, cuz the ones I've talked to think the idea sucks.
I do know it costs us just as much to open up for one day as it does to open up for two...not to mention taking an extra week from Life for teardown. And I would rather be at Dickens on xmas eve than anywhere else, but not to tear down the booth!
Any takers?

Snyder's Pow-Wow, in Valley Springs, CA

Ok, first of all, it's not Ren-Fair.

Here's the hyperlink: http://www.valleyspringspowwow.com/

It's always the first weekend in May.

They have about 200 booth spaces. There were some left empty this year.

There is no fee to attend the Pow-Wow and there is plenty of free parking for those that attend.

It's held in the pasture of a working cattle ranch. They move the cattle to a different part of the ranch, so they aren't a problem.

The show is open to the Public for three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Thursday is for Dealers and their friends to shop. It is possible to set up on Tuesday or Wednesday and not take down until Monday (but it is polite to ask permission to do so).

I rented a booth this year, it was US$130 for the booth, US$45 for electricity and a US$10 deposit for the 'pig tail' adaptor. I snuck out in the middle of the night and as a result, I didn't get my deposit back.

The booth was supposed to be 10' x 30', but the one I got was at least 12' wide. Part of it may have been that I was assigned a corner booth.

The focus of the Pow-Wow is mainly rocks, but there is also interest in NA dancing chanting, drumming & costuming, as well as Old-Timey steam engines and R/C modeling.

By contractural requirement, at least 75% of my booth had to be either Ladipary or rock oriented (Uhhh... silver comes from rocks, right?). I don't see how this requirement could apply to the food booths. I'm pretty certain that this rule is NOT strictly enforced.

I got a Shelter Logic 10' by 20' awning with skirts (about US$200 from Northern Tools - shipping was expensive). I've color-coded the pipejoints with various colors of electrical tape, which makes setting it up a lot easier when I'm brain-dead.

I also used an Ozark Trail awning that I bought in the sporting goods section of Wal-Mart. I forget how much it was, but it's 8' by 11' and it's light enough to move around as the sun shifts. I also brought along the 8' by 8' Ozark Trails tent (also purchased from Wal-Mart) and pitched it inside the 10' x 20' awming. One of the nice things about Snyder's Pow-Wow is that they let you sleep in your booth - makes for good security.

My inventory consisted of opal necklaces that I've made, sterling silver chainmail jewelry that I've made, and a few items from my coin collection. Also, I had a few left-over supplies and used tools that I wanted to get rid of - a real hodge-podge. The chain mail sold best.

I'd made arrangements with an on-line friend for her to ship me a bunch of her necklaces and earrings. They didn't show up in time for me to get them loaded onto the truck. I found out later that they'd been sent to the wrong PO Box. I almost asked if there was stuff there for me... but there was a line and I was overloaded with things to do... oh, well.

One of the potential customers at the show recommended that I take my wares to the RenFair at Valhalla (in south Lake Tahoe), so I'm going there next Friday to explore the possibilities.

I'll probably go back to Snyder's next year, but it'd sure be nice to have some help... I was hoping for a craftsperson that wanted to share booth space and was able to help me set up and take down.

Oh, yeah - Snyder's wants to know what your resale license number is. I had to learn about calculating and paying sales tax. I've got to say that I do NOT like being co-opted by the state!

I am wondering how it is. If they allow booth sharing--? If so--I might be looking for someone to share with (who doesn't make jewelry or mosaics). This festival looks very cool.

Please let me know if youhave experience there!

I would especially love to hear from someone who has been a vendor of jewelry or mosaics.

CALL TO ACTION - PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVIST LISTS

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As pointed out by Amanda Witherell of the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the future of our City’s fabulous street fairs and music festivals is threatened by policy changes and fee hikes currently being pushed by various city departments. In particular, the Rec and Parks Department and Commission seems to have forgotten its mandate to serve the city as a whole and instead, are making radical policy changes to appease select neighbor groups and in one case, one individual who has harassed city bureaucrats over sound levels at Sharon Meadow.

The SFLNC is joining with many other city groups to say we've had enough, that the city's outdoor events are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists who come here for our world class cultural attractions. City policy should not be made in closed door meetings between bureaucrats and small groups of neighbors, without input from event organizers or thousands of attendees.

Please join the SFLNC in telling City politicians and bureaucrats that our summer street events and music festivals are a crucial part of our cultural fabric and need protection from neighbors who prefer the city to sound like Walnut Creek. Please tell the City that our special events need protection not fee hikes that threaten their financial viability. Please tell the police department and mayor's office that responsible adults should be able to drink a beer at city events without being herded into small and unnecessary beer gardens that restrict our civil liberties.

Preliminary communications with Rec and Parks Commissioners indicate a good chance that they will vote to deny North Beach Jazz Festival the ability to serve beer and wine in Washington Square Park, which they have done for 12 years without incident. We need to express our outrage that such a radical policy change is being made without adequate public input or due process. North Beach Jazz is a free festival whose budget is largely paid by revenue from beer and wine sales. Loss of that revenue will kill the free festival, as simple as that. It might be understandable if the event had serious problems due to beer and wine sales, but that has never been the case. Rec and Park is taking away the organizers ability to sell beer and wine to appease some neighbors and an anti-alcohol local police captain. No one asked the opinion of the 35,000 people who attend the two day free event and who enjoy a drink while listening to jazz in the Park

Please read the excellent articles in the Bay Guardian and ACT NOW to save North Beach Jazz Festival and other city music festivals and street fairs. Instructions on how you can help are posted here from the organizers of North Beach jazz. Even if you are not a jazz lover, these changes have a way of becoming city policy if we don’t object and your street fair or festival may be next. ACT NOW!
CALL TO ACTION!!! - SAVE NORTH BEACH JAZZ FEST

If you can't see this email, click HERE
PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO ALL MUSIC FANS and DEFENDERS of CIVIL LIBERTY

BACKGROUND

· North Beach Jazz Fest in Washington Square Park is a 12-year-old family friendly event that remains free by selling food, beer, and wine

· NBJF has always been permitted to sell alcoholic beverages in Washington Square Park. No problems have ever resulted from alcohol sales at this event.

· This year, the SF Police Department is pushing a "beer garden" policy for outdoor events, forcing organizers to create small fenced in 21+ areas. This policy limits access for those under 21, including children with their parents.

· Because of the access limitations created by beer gardens, the SF Recreation and Parks Operations Committee voted on May 3rd to deny NBJF the ability to sell alcohol in Washington Square Park.

· This denial threatens NBJF since revenue from beverage sales pay for the majority of festival expenses. Without this revenue, NBJF will go bankrupt.

· On Tuesday, May 30, 2pm in Room 416 of City Hall, the full commission of SF Rec. & Park will vote to approve or deny their application.

HOW CAN YOU HELP SAVE NORTH BEACH JAZZ FEST?

· SEND AN EMAIL to savenbjf@sunsetpromotions.net - this will forward your email to all the Rec. & Park Commissioners & Operations Staff , Board of Supervisors, and the Mayor.
Use Subject = "Save NBJF"

· CALL: The SF Rec. & Park Dept. at 415-831-2701 - Ask for G.M. Yomi Agunbiade

· SPEAK: Come to City Hall on the 30th and SPEAK YOUR MIND

(Please try to do ALL THREE if you can as we need your support every step of the way)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some talking points for CUT & PASTE, and please be courteous in all communications

· Rec and Parks department policy should be made by all stakeholders, not a select few

· Beer and Wine sales have never been a problem at North Beach Jazz Fest

· Without police imposed “beer gardens”, people of all ages can enjoy free jazz in Washington Square Park

· Beer Gardens are an unnecessary intrusion on our civil liberties

· Responsible adults should be able to drink at licensed events in City parks

· Without the revenue from beer and wine sales, the North Beach Jazz Fest will cease to exist

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THANKS: To the following individuals and organizations, for their support in our time of need: The thousands of music fans in San Francisco. SF Outdoor Events Coalition, North Beach Chamber of Commerce, SF Late Night Coalition, IN-Ticketing, Nomad Printing & Rocket Postcards, Matagrano INC, SFStation, SFWeekly, Nitevibe, LoveFest, True Skool, Mayor Gavin Newsom, District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin

I posted this to all the other Faire related tribes, but somehow missed this one. If you knew Marty, or any of the old Faire Folk from the 70's,(yes there are a few of us left!) Sorry to be the bearer, but pass it on if you can.

Ol Martycakes McDowell, Uncle Filthy, just might be fighting his final battle. He has been in a restless coma with no brain activity for many days. Who knows if this old fighter will win out and come back again, or just pass on. Whatever the current outcome, no matter how cantankerous the old coot was, he still deserves our prayers. Thank you, with love, Sally Swannycakes
PS: Look at my pictures for more Marty pics, old Bubba Bud, and general old classic pics from Faire days gone by.

Cafepress & Froogle

If you have a cafepress shop to sell some of your art you may already know that because cafepress is so huge, Google's shopping search engine "Froogle" is not suppose to accept listings from individual cafepress stores, and restricts the number of products they will list from the central Cafepress.com corporate account.

Well, I seem to have found a way around that... Since I already was listed in Froogle using my regular retail website, I created links from my regular website to my cafepress products (See this page for example links http://www.historicgames.com/notecards.html ) and then entered them in my Froogle database as if they were just being sold from my regular site. Since Froogle drops your listings if you don't update it, I just add another one or two of my Cafepress items every month to keep it updated.

At this point I am just linking directly to the graphics of my products in Cafepress, but in the long run it might prevent Froogle from figuring out this ploy if you host the graphics as part of your own website rather then hotlinking to them in Cafepress.

Hey Boothies
How many of you have the page for your tribes set to "show all" as opposed to "topics"? I'm at a loss what to do about any listings you may post, cuz lots of us won't see them. I hear we'll be able to set our homepages the same way soon, so I'll be getting my listings there, but if you have something you think the whole tribe should see, send it to me and I'll approve it, or just write "spam" or "promo"in the subject line or something so I know its not a discussion topic.
Thanx

Just thought I'ld toss out an idea I put on our website.
As part of the application process, some of the more strict historical reenactments we attend ask for photos of our booth/encampment as well as photos of us in period attire. So, I started a little page for event coordinators explaining what we do, and promoting why they should include us in their event, as well as listing some of the juried events we have attended. http://historicgames.com/jury.html

Do the big California shows really charge a percentage of your sales? We just had dinner with a couple local crafters and one of the couples who are former Bristol merchants heard that Bristol is going to be starting this practice.

Greetings One and All!
I am a new member to this group and The Faires in general.
I have always shown my work in Fine Art Galleries but have recently decided that I would really rather, also actually, participate as an artist in Faires and Festivals.
I live in Southern Oregon and am interested in participating in Oregon and Northern California.
I am creating a whole new line of Faerie Art as we speak.
So, to start, my questions are What are the cool faires in my area and what is the best way to get involved, get judged in and such.
I would also really appreciate any big do's and don'ts.
Bliss
Jason

Hiya. Do any booth owners need help rigging and de-rigging for dickens? I am promised to Jo Adell for stall work during the run of Dickens, but I could use some extra work to help me survive until the Spring term. I have rigged & de-rigged with booths & guilds at Ren Faires in Northern Cal & clubs in the UK. Also, I am based in SF and not very far from the Cow Palace.

Cheers :-)

On Monday i put up a long, complimentary review of this year's Golden Gate Faire. It seems to have vanished. I just wanted to say I was very favorably impressed by the improvement in vending- much more Handcrafted stuff, not nearly as much overlap in the manufactured/India Arts cop-out crap, some very Nice manufactured stuff- the Art Nuveaux resin stuff was beautiful if off-period- there was more real tribal stuff instead of the afore mentioned India Arts stuff. And wow, the Kelp baskets, what a find!
Some people of my aquaintance were sniffing at the aluminum & O-ring chainmail but like I said, if its handmade and appeals to the Ren-shopping demographic, and hell its a traditional technique- works for me!
Bill, I sent you my review privately, didn't you ever get it?

Hi,
I am dong my first crafts booth at a festival next week (starts thurs--time's running out). I need a rack that will fit an older car ('86 Mercedes) without rain gutters, to strap on a canopy and some large metal free-standing grids.

Am willing to travel if need be to pick up.

Am willing to buy, barter or borrow (I am very trustworthy and responsible).

Thanks!

Seeking Advice on Booth Rental Companies.

Hello all,

I am new to this tribe and new to the booth side of faires and expositions. I am thankful I found you all because it appears you just might be able to help me out with some of your expertise for which I would be much obliged. I am considering applying for a booth in the San Francisco Dickens Faire in 2006.

Does anyone know of a company that rents prefabricated booths? Is there such a thing? To be plain, not the actual faire booth space which I understand is a different matter altogether, but perhaps there is a place that rents the physical “buildings” or perhaps the word in this case is “set?” I’m not certain if there are different terms, but I am not looking for something akin to a tent or exhibition display board sort of booth but rather something that satisfies period requirements of the SF Dickens faire.

If so, which would you recommend, and what is a fair rental rate? I am trying to see if it is cheaper than building and tearing my own down each year, or paying storage costs for one’s own booth/set pieces or simply saves time, but perhaps there are other considerations I have yet to find in choosing a type of set-up.

Thank you for your time and advice,
Leilani

DO YOU HAVE YOUR PASS?

from the Office:

What was that!?! Late? The heck you say!

Yes indeed, if you are planning on registering this weekend you are in fact- late.

This may pose a problem for some of you, especially those of you who are not riding in with anyone who already has a pass.

We are charging customers for parking this year. This means that if you do not have a pass that distinguishes you as a participant rather than a customer the parking staff will charge you to park, and you will not have access to the lovely (and closer) parking lot reserved for participants.

Remember, the parking staff is full of people who do not work faire and will not recognize anyone. They also do not have radios and cannot reach anyone who would recognize you. So, we are strongly suggesting that you come down to the site on Friday to get everything taken care of ahead of time. Pass house will be open from 10am until 6pm and someone will be available to do costume approval during those hours

Found my EZ-Up, Still looking for another craftswoman to share booth space

Hi,
I posted before and needed the EZ-Up too, now I just need naother craftswoman to share booth space at this upcoming women's festival:

http://www.campbettycampout.com/

The cost would be $150 each, for the three day event which should have over 2000 attendees. Admission (which includes camping I believe) is included--also lots of music, comedy and workshops.

It is in Laytonville, which is all the way up in northern CA (3 hrs north of SF).

I will be selling silver beaded jewelry and broken plate mosaics. It would be best if our art was different so as not to compete, but if you have jewelry that is of another sort that could work too.

We could drive up together and share gas costs too if that is convenient (I am in Santa Cruz).

This should be lots of fun and potentially lucrative too!

Contact me (directly is best) soon as the deadline is approaching and the booths will be snatched up quickly!

I am requesting that you please Do NOt Crosspost, or put up Postings that simply direct us to a Listing on the same page.
I know Made the exact same request yesterday but the young lady who posted the posting leading to a listing seems to have deleted her entire thread so I am requesting again-
You may post single items (announcements, requests) in the posting section ONLY if you are Not Cross-posting the same post on every tribe you can think of. Please keep your Postings On Topic for this tribe-this is about working in or owning a Booth at an Event, it is not specifically a Rennie tribe.
If you have an announcement you want to share, put up a LISTING. I don't care what the topic is, as long as it is a Listing and not a Posting.
But Please, Please, don't put up a Posting pointing us to a listing. After today I will delete them, as I absolutely hate opening up every tribe I belong to to read the same cross-post.

Sorry for being harsh but I do not like having to make ANY requests of you all, and I AM on drugs right now so not speking too clearly!

Fair Oaks Rant

I just wrote this for Faire Folk but decided i'd be better served & more diplomatic to post it here instead. Just back from Fair Oaks "Renaissance" fayre. i didn't make my booth fee. people seem to think a $25 dollar henna tattoo which will fade within a week more valuable than a hancrafted, gemstone wind chime, or even a simple $15 bell.

Somebody in FF said, always sad to lose an artist booth". Here's why they're getting lost:

I read the vendor contract this morning, it doesn't say all items must be handcrafted but i can testify that 90% of the vendors A) did not make any of the products they sold
B) violated specific contract requirements regarding their display, products and set up schedule- a fairy doll in a cardboard box marked "made in China" is neither authentic nor period, but boy were they all over the place. Not to mention identical manufactured products in many booths, sometimes right next to each other."all booths MUST be set up by 6AM seems to have been translated as, "if you show up at 9:45 on opening day, as long as we have your booth fee, go ahead and set up While the Faire is Open in your t-shirt. No Visible aluminum or plastic- every single EZup had all metal, fixtures, telescoping 7 accordioning mechanisms in full sight, most of them had the plastic walls that come with it up.
C) violated specific specific costume requirements- or did i miss the notes that state "authentic 16th century clothing" is a sundress, a pair of mosquito wings & ball point pen tattoos all over.

It is up to the people who buy tickets for faires to let the promoters know what is legitimate, in their eyes, for a "renaissance" fair. What i don't get is why nobody has yet put on a "fantasy' fair instead...but if you don't want the Artists to leave, you gotta tell the promoters Why they are leaving.Me, i'm no diplomat, i can't do it!

So what's the deal? How Do i deal????

Working with actors (x-posted)

I am a booth owner at Dickend Fair. I am a stage actor at Dickens Fair. I am a Street Actor at Dickens Fair. My booth is a stage where anybody can come and gig or play music. There is almost always Something going on in and around my booth.Customers see action and want to see what's going on and end up buying something.

So why am I haering that many booth owners are telling the street actors- the Costers, Temperance, the Fairies, and my own Jeremy's Escort Service to be quiet, stay away from their booths, stop drawing attention to their booths, stop attracting paying customers to ther booths?

I do my Christmas shopping at DIckens. I make it a point to buy from booths that encourage actors & gigs in the neighborhood. I will now make it a point to boycott, and all the street actors will also boycott, any booth that makes us go away.

We do Dickens for love and for fun. Dickens Fair, and Ren Faire, are not about shopping, they are about theater, with shopping. And the booth fees are far, far more reasonable than street faires to begin with.

I really, really want to teach workshops next year...

Some of you know me as Justin Case, editor of The Bulletin newspaper at the Dickens Christmas Fair. I publish a fresh issue free to customers and actors each weekend during the Fair. It is supported through donations and advertising from the vendors. Since I was getting an enthusiastic response from several vendors and actors over the idea, I created a separate website for my little 'content-rich' publication geared toward both Renaissance and Dickens' Faires to expand the idea. As a long-time actor and boothie, I am committed to promoting the struggling Faire vendors in this unique and (I trust) powerful manner. It's online debut is at:

anyone out there needing a few quick paychecks before the show opens? because i need workers! you know, preferably from our community, who care about the show, and not so much the bottom line....at worst we'll have 2 1/2 weeks to throw together two ale stand roofs and a bunch of view blocks for Main Gate and walkthroughs, contingent upon, of course, delivery of the burlap. at best, we'll have about 4, depending on how much fabric is left over from last year...so it'll be tight, and if you're willing to bust your tooshie choating and hanging and stapling like a mad Banshee, then do i ever have a job for you! contact me on or off list. i'm on Tribe almost continuously...

Date: 2005-02-16, 11:19PM PST

Greetings!

Small jewelry business seeks a responsible, reliable individual to manage our booths for this year’s selling season (March to October).

We will be participating in about 20 weekends of renaissance faires/festivals, along with some Scottish/ Celtic events. The events are held throughout California, Oregon, and Washington, but mostly center around Northern California. Each event lasts anywhere from one to six weekends.

The ideal candidate should enjoy dressing in costume, speaking old English, and interacting with customers nonstop throughout the day. While this gig can be great fun, it is also a lot of work. You have to work very long hours (usually 8am to 7pm), as well as set up and take down the booth. Booth setup typically must be done on Friday afternoon or evening, and takedown is on Sunday night. Moderate lifting is required.

Priority will be given to to individuals who have experience with renaissance faires/festivals, either as patrons or as participants. Extra points for those who have access to a cargo vehicle, such as a mini-van, van, SUV, or a very large station wagon. The tables, chairs, canopy, etc., take up quite a bit of space.

Compensation: $100 per day of selling, plus 10% of total sales. You can expect to make approximately $300 per weekend. The ideal candidate will do this job for fun, and the money will be a nice bonus. Considering the long hours and hard work, as well as the driving, this gig is ideal for someone who really likes renaissance faires, and wants to make a little extra cash on the side. Extra points for guild members!

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED:

Please send us a paragraph about yourself, describing all pertinent details. Even a picture in costume would be great! We will contact those we are interested in and ask for more information (resume, references, etc.) by February 24th. The sooner we hear from you, the better!

Gramercy!

I keep finding out about stuff after the deadlines!
My product is geared towards Ren Faires, Hippie/Spiritual /Newage /Deadhead that doesn't take itself too seriously & Celtic events.
And mainstream crafts, i spose! Just they seem to have much higher booth fees...

if I had any good sources, I'd post 'em!

I had had a long talk with Yanna, who makes the Animal Angels. She tells me that many of the vendors at Casa are marketing items that A) the never sent a picture of for screening and B) are manufactured and imported.
Now i Know that Casa Faire requires All items to be handmade, in fact i'm tolf their screening policies are stricter than AYLI's.
But if unscreened, manufactured, cheap items are getting through, Whats The Point of Screening At ALL?
Who is doing the actual craft review for any given faire? Are they themselves working craftspeople, such as the old and lamented Guild Council or are they the people who write the checks?Once again i ask, WHY do promoters require us to send pictures of our handmade original are only to allow in the same crap you can buy at any store?
Why shouldn't Just ANybody send their fees and set up and sell whatever the fuck they feel like?

Advice on a company to make me a Booth Banner...

Greetings all...
I have a big show in LA in mid October, I have been searching different companies online to find one that can create a simple or (added business logo) outdoor booth Vinyl banner. With grommets, one that won't fall apart easily... I would need a sort of long Horizontal banner (to run along top of 10' by 10' ez-up canopy entrance) but not necessarily the 10' length of my booth (as it could be too costly)...
I was thinking maybe more like 2' by 6' or 2' by 8' depending on price difference.
& at least 2 or 3 colors. Vinyl color either black background with Purple lettering, or Burgandy Background with Black lettering, or Purple background with Black lettering... (& a possibility of seeing how much extra a business logo image to the left or right of my biz name would be.)
I haven't given much thought to the logo colors or if it would work out at all against the more darker/rich background banner color.

If anyone has dealt with a good company, not too expensive... (I priced online & a 2' by 6' came out to be anywhere from $35 (real basic white background) to about $50-$60 (for a little more but possibly not including a logo).

Please leave me with any feedback & or links if possible. I've tried some sites where you could enter in your info & you were supposed to be able to see what it might look like in real time... but the option did not work for me.

Thanks & sorry so long, I just want to be thorough.
Much Appreciated.
p.s. any feedback about long Horizontal banner colors as viewed from afar on booths would also be appreciated.

Boothie Tag!

Thought I'd put this out there as an idea and see how much interest it generates. It's a game I've played with a select few people, but we had oodles of fun and it was a good gimmick. It involves chalk dust and a lot of grabbing. ;-) One person from each booth is "it" with a pouch of chalk dust. Booths are divided into teams (not necessarily in the same area), and each team is given the same color. To tag someone, simply reach into your pouch, get a bit of dust, and plant a handprint on your "victim". The chalk will wash right out of clothes and skin so is safe to use as a marker. This works best with boothies and participants because we can count them at the end of the day. The prize? Many giggles, gropes, a few good memories, a whole new outlook on teamwork, and a fun way to interact with each other and the "mundanes" (we can tag them too, just can't count 'em) However, also depending on interest and participation, we might just be able to persuade one of the alestands to donate a beer or two as well, or maybe someone has some other ideas?

HELP! Stafford Job NEEDED!

Aaaaaacckkk!
Okay, so I just found out yesterday, that Leather Roses will NOT be at Stafford this year. :C
So, I need a job.
Now, unfortunately, I won't be there for 3rd & 6th weekends.
I will be there for ALL of 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th weekends.
Pay is negotiable. I DO need a gate pass and parking pass.
I have been working at Faire -as a boothie- since 1976, and work as a retail cashier mundanely.

Any suggestions?
Have a job for me?
You can post here, or contact me privately.

(I would work for Qatana, but I'm not real great on the whole character with the full background thing. We already talked. ;) )

Otherwise known as Jo, i was practically born in a booth. I started going to craft fairs with my mom over 30 years ago, and knew all along that i was spoiled for "real jobs" at a very young age.
I made craft production, artists support & booth management my career for years, till i developed Wishing Bells and finally opened my own booth!
Currently i do Renaissance Faires & counter-cultural festivals; i figure my target market are the kind of people i like to hang around with! And twice a year i put on a "business suit" at the San Francisco Gift Show, trying to develop a wholesale business to support my faire habit.
As my dog is very old i don't do much travelling yet but intend to check out some festivals out-of-town in the future- for all i've been doing this all my life i've never actually Lived on the Road!
Tell us who you are! And feel free to post links to your site & a picture of your booth/product.
If you post a help wanted, please put the name of your booth in the header first(so&so seeks...), thanks.
